eLearning Grading and Reporting

BCPS is committed to equitable, accurate, specific, and timely information in all aspects of student grading.  Grades are intended to be a reflection of a student’s demonstrated abilities and require students to submit evidence of their learning.  eLearning teachers provide a variety of different assessment opportunities to determine a student’s marking period grade, and will include feedback to help students learn and achieve.

eLearning follows the BCPS Grading and Reporting guidelines published at http://www.bcps.org/academics/grading/Grading-and-Reporting-Procedures.pdf. In an effort to maintain consistency and transparency, please note the following:

  • eLearning marking period grades are a combination of minor and major assessments.  Practice assignments are extremely valuable tools for students and teachers, and completing these practice items helps teachers identify student strengths and needs.  Practice assignments may be evaluated and assigned a grade to show learning progress, but grades for practice items will not factor into marking period averages.
  • Grading categories and weights for all eLearning courses are as follows:  Major Summative Assessments (such as unit tests, large-scale projects/ presentations, performance tasks) = 30% of the quarter grade.  Minor Summative Assessments (such as quizzes, constructed responses, graded discussions, small-scale assignments) = 70% of the quarter grade.
  • Graded assignments/ assessments will be a combination of eLearning teacher-created tasks and content office tasks.  Content office tasks must be completed in the window that they are assigned.  Students may/ may not be eligible to re-take content-office tasks.  Teachers will inform students via Schoology of all assignments/ assessments that are not eligible for a re-take or submission beyond a due date.
  • Due dates will be assigned to all eLearning teacher-created assignments/assessments that will be factored into the marking period grade (Major & Minor Assessments). Once a due date has passed, any assignment that is not submitted will receive an “M” in the gradebook.  This will calculate as a “0” in the gradebook and serve as a warning that the assignment is overdue and must be submitted.  Students may submit eLearning teacher-created assignments until the last day of the quarter.  Any work submitted beyond the marking period may be evaluated for accuracy and feedback, but not count toward the marking period grade.
  • eLearning teachers evaluate submitted work to determine student learning, student readiness, and student success.  Parents and students can expect timely grading and reporting feedback from all eLearning teachers.
  • Attendance to live session is required for eLearning classes, and student attendance allows teachers to support student learning in a variety of ways.   Student attendance to live sessions is a requirement of the program and can have a great impact on student success.  Participation during class and attendance to class do not factor into a marking period grade.  However, teachers may score the quality of student responses and contributions to a discussion when a grading rubric is presented to students and expectations have been communicated in advance.
